Capacitive sensors are often also referred to as capacitive proximity switches. They are position sensors. These sensors operate by a change in the electrical field that is in the active zone and thus in the environment of the so-called sensor electrode. Capacitive sensors can detect different media through non-metallic vessel walls or on bypass pipes and are therefore often used for level measurement. The medium to be detected increases the capacitance which leads to a change in the output status of the sensor.
Consequently there are numerous applications for capacitive sensors such as:
- Detection of metals and almost all plastics
- Detection of glass, ceramics, wood and paper
- Detection of conductive media or bulk materials
