Safety mats, also known as contact mats, are categorised as tactile sensors, as they detect mechanical movements.
They are used in an industrial setting, for area safeguarding, and prevent unchecked access. When the contact mat is stepped on, a short circuit is triggered. This is detected, the machine movement is stopped, and personal injuries are thus avoided.
Safety mats from ASO Safety Solutions
Manufacturer ASO Safety Solutions specialises in the production of safety sensors, which also include the patented Sentir® mat safety mats. The mats are highly resistant to external physical influences and the textured surface means the mats can be safely walked on.
The safety mats function according to the following principle: an insulating layer separates two conductive plates inside the mat from one another. If the mat is stepped on, the conductive plates touch, and a short circuit occurs. Area safeguarding is thus facilitated, as the mats can be easily joined together, and larger areas can thus be safeguarded. Expanding the area is simple. To do this, only the abutting edges need to be cut using a cutter, and the integrated connectors joined together. Up to ten mats can be joined together, whereby the overall surface area must not exceed 10 m².
Safety mats offer the following advantages:
At Automation24, you can get the Sentir® mat safety mats from ASO Safety Solutions, including the required accessories, at attractive prices. The safety sensors from the Safety Technology product category are available in four different sizes. There are also a wide range of accessories for safety sensors available. Corner connectors and mounting rails are also available for combining multiple mats. If the safety mats are required to withstand heavy loads such as forklift trucks, Automation24 carries ramp rails within its product range.
The safety mats are connected according to the same principle as the safety edges and safety bumpers from ASO Safety Solutions. You can select 4-wire connection (cross-fault detection) whereby the mats can analyse a wide range of safety relays and safety controllers. The other option is a procedure for the bridging of a terminal resistor, developed especially by ASO Safety Solutions. For this, you require a safety relay from ASO and the compatible terminal resistor. With this method, the required cabling work is significantly reduced.
If you prefer contactless area safeguarding, you can use safety scanners.
